Swim Time Converter
— Pool & Course Conversion
Convert swim times between 25m (short course metres), 50m (long course metres) and 25-yard pools using the official FINA/World Aquatics Course Conversion Factor. Also convert pace between metres and yards.

Why pool length changes your swim time
In a 25m pool you push off the wall every 25 metres — that’s 4 walls per 100m. In a 50m pool you only push off twice per 100m. Each wall push-off adds 0.5–1.0 seconds of free speed, which means short-course (25m) times are inherently faster than long-course (50m) times for the same swimmer.
This makes direct time comparisons between courses misleading. A 1:00 SCM (25m pool) 100m freestyle is NOT equivalent to a 1:00 LCM (50m pool) 100m freestyle. The SCM time is significantly faster in real-world terms.
FINA (now World Aquatics) developed the Course Conversion Factor (CCF) to standardise comparison. It allows coaches, swimmers and selectors to compare performances across course lengths using a single, stroke- and distance-specific factor.
The three pool standards
| Pool Type | Abbreviation | Length | Walls/100m |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short Course Metres | SCM | 25 m | 4 |
| Long Course Metres | LCM | 50 m | 2 |
| Short Course Yards | SCY | 25 yd (22.86 m) | 4+ |
Quick rule of thumb
Add roughly 1–2 seconds per 100m when converting SCM → LCM for freestyle. For breaststroke the difference is smaller (walls help less). For backstroke and butterfly it sits in between.
FINA Course Conversion Factors (CCF) by event
These are the official CCF values used by World Aquatics to convert SCM times to their LCM equivalents. A lower CCF means SCM swimmers benefit more from turns in that event.
